Better late than never
Chapter Eleven
Felicia had to sit down, she very seldom sat down on her job unless she were talking to a patient and didn’t want to overwhelm them by standing over them. She didn’t know what to say. “Where is he?” She held her breath waiting for her daughter to tell her that maybe the man who had impregnated her sister wasn’t the same man whom she had slept with. She could feel the palms of her hands sweating as she held the phone tight waiting for her daughter to say something else. “His name is Deon Fletcher. He is serving a fifteen year sentence for aiding and abetting armed robbery. I am going to see him this weekend mama. I have to look him in the eyes.” Felicia covered her mouth with one hand as she listened to her daughter tell her how she had contacted her lawyer to draw up paternity papers that would force the man to take a DNA test in his cell. Felicia had to get herself together, she was on the job and she still had four hours to go. She told Cara that she would speak with her about it when she got home. She took a deep breath to calm herself and then she went back to her job duties.
Saturday came quick for Cara. She had so many things on her mind that she didn’t know if she were coming or going but she knew she had to get herself together. A.J. checked on her everyday. Today he was coming to the prison with her for support. She needed it. Shaia couldn’t come she had to host a retirement party. So Cara called her mother and her Aunt Connie. They were both nervous but they agreed that they needed to get it all over with.
The ride to the prison was long but A.J. drove unselfishly. When they pulled up the prison and got out of his truck A.J. stood behind the women as they went into the dreary looking prison to confront the man who had changed all of their lives.
They went through metal detectors and strip search and then they waited for almost two hours for visitation hours to begin. The buzzer wrung and they got in line to go beyond a huge grey metal door. Beyond the grey metal door were several tables and chairs. They were told to sit down as the inmates were led in. Cara watched each man as they came in and each inmate knew who was visiting them because they went straight to the table where the visitor was seated. The last inmate that was led in stood at the grey door looking around trying to find a face that he recognized, and when he looked in their direction, Connie covered her mouth to stifle her cry. A.J. rubbed her shoulder. Cara stood. The man dressed in the royal blue jumpsuit stared in her direction. The guard said something to him and he slowly walked over.
